REPOSE: A Familiar Horror That Becomes Something Entirely Its Own

At first, REPOSE feels like another entry in the wave of indie horror dungeon crawlers — mysterious facilities, endless hallways, scattered objects, and lurking monsters. You play as an employee working for a cryptic organization known only as The Company, exploring decrepit rooms in search of oxygen tanks and answers about what happened here. But after a few minutes, it’s clear that REPOSE isn’t just another imitation of Lethal Company or Backrooms-style horror.

Created by Hungarian solo developer Bozó Attila Bertold, REPOSE stands apart through its minimalist black-and-white pixel art and its deliberately old-school design. The game feels nostalgic and eerie at once — both a love letter to classic PC horror and a playful critique of it. Despite its simple visuals, there’s an underlying humor and mystery that make every discovery feel personal and strange.

Bertold didn’t set out to follow modern horror trends. He built REPOSE from his own influences and curiosities, drawing bits of inspiration from games like Doom 3, Thief, and Amnesia: The Bunker. The result is a mix of old and new ideas that constantly push against player expectations. “Genres are useful as a starting point,” he says, “but not as an end goal.”

In REPOSE, every decision feels heavy. You have a flashlight and an axe, but you can’t use them at the same time — a direct homage to Doom 3. A step counter at the bottom of the screen starts at 50 and ticks down with every move. When it reaches zero, you collapse and respawn at your last bed. Oxygen tanks can replenish the counter, but they’re scarce, and death from the facility’s horrifying creatures comes swiftly. The result is an atmosphere that’s both claustrophobic and strangely hypnotic.

Progress in REPOSE comes through trial, error, and memory. As you learn each area’s layout, you become more efficient — opening doors faster, dodging enemies, and managing your limited steps. The game’s password-style save system, inspired by retro cartridges, reinforces its eerie, timeless feeling.

Even though REPOSE shares familiar horror elements — dim lights, industrial corridors, and cryptic lore — it ultimately feels like something different. Its minimalist design, restrictive systems, and dry humor make it unsettling in a quiet, deliberate way. You never quite know whether you’re uncovering answers or just sinking deeper into the mystery.

For Bertold, that uncertainty is the point. REPOSE is not just about surviving — it’s about discovering how far you’ll go when the world keeps pushing back.
